Cruise. IS it worth it?
Cruises often get labeled as “expensive vacations,” but that’s not always true. When you break down what’s included (lodging, meals, entertainment, and transportation) they can be actually one of the best deals in travel. Here’s how to make the most of your money while cruising and why it might be more worth it than you think!
What makes cruises appealing?
Excursions?
Multiple
Destinations?
Food?
Cruises offer convenience and comfort, making them a popular choice for travelers of all ages. Here are some reasons people LOVE them:
– All-in-one experience: Food, lodging, and activities are included with no extra decisions.
– Multiple destinations: Visit several places without repacking your suitcase.
– Entertainment options: From live shows to pools and fitness centers, there’s always something to do or see.
– Ease of planning: Once you book, most decisions are handled for you with no extra stress.
Why cruises can be a good value
First, let’s do some quick math:
A seven day cruise to the Caribbean costs roughly around $1,200 per person (depending on the room package you purchase). That price usually includes:
– All means and snacks
– Your cabin (like a floating hotel room)
– Daily entertainment and activities
– Stops at multiple BEAUTIFUL destinations
Now compare that to a week-long land trip:
– Flights: $400
– Hotels or Air bnb’s: (7 nights x $150): $1,050
– Meals ($50/day): $350
– Excursions and activities: $300
That’s $2,100 total. Nearly double the cruise price. Even with a few onboard extras, cruising often wins out on overall value. (AND chances are, you’ll be spending more $$ on food and activities than what you think)
Smart ways to save $$ on a cruise
Even though cruises can be a great deal, small decisions can save you hundreds more.
1. Book at The Right Time
– Cruise prices drop during the “shoulder seasons” (spring and fall). Booking early or snagging a last-minute deal can save.
2. Skip the Pricey Add-Ons
Drink packages can cost $60-$90 per day (usually around $300 total), more than most people actually use. Instead:
– Bring reusable water bottles.
– Take advantage of free tea, coffee, and juices.
– Buy drinks individually (without the package) if you only plan to have one or two a day
* Sometimes the drink packages can be worth it. If you decide to just buy one, that person only can get drinks for everyone else. BUT, it saves on 4 people each having their own package.
3. Plan Excursions Independently
Booking excursions directly through the cruise line is easy but expensive. You can often save at least 30% by booking the same experience through local tour operators or exploring ports on your own.
4. Watch Out for Wi-Fi Traps
– Internet packages can reach $150+ per week. Skip it unless you need to work. Many ports have free Wi-Fi, and you even have service at ports.
*None of us bought Wi-Fi when we went, and it was the best decision ever. Getting to de-tatch from everything for a full week made the vacation so much better.
5. Bring Your Own Essentials
Items like sunscreen, motion sickness medicine, or basic toiletries cost 2-3x more onboard. Pack them ahead of time and avoid that markup.
Whats actually worth the upgrade
Some extras can improve your cruise experience without breaking your budget:
– Balcony cabins: Sometimes only $100-$200 more for a week, and worth it for private views. (If you don’t plan on being in your room much, an inside cabin will be just fine, minus the views)
– Specialty dining: Try one night at a restaurant (specialty dining includes restaurants that are not part of the main dining room. These are extra $ and are charged to your room) on the boat instead of buying the full package for it. (Included in the cruise, is a free meal every night in the main dining room. You get a handful of choices and 3-4 courses you don’t have to pay extra for)!
Finally: is a cruise worth it?
When you consider that your cruise fare inlcudes food, lodging, entertainment, and transportation between countries, it’s often a better deal than a traditional tradition.
Even if you spend a little on extras (say $1,000 for the total week), you’re still getting a vacation with luxury amentities, ocean views, and multiple destinations for less than a typical trip would cost.
In short: cruises are absolutely worth it, especially if you know how to travel smart.
